What is 24 Carat gold?

“Carat” is a measure of purity of gold, as a fraction of 24. So, 24 carat gold is pure gold (24/24 or at least 99.99% pure)

I have allergies – can you help?

Yes – many clients have allergies to lower purity gold jewellery. Often the reason is that lower purity jewellery has less gold than other metals (9 carat gold is only 37.5% pure), and these other metals can cause allergic reactions. The solution is usually to stick with 18 carat gold, or platinum (which is always pure metal). Some clients ask for earrings with platinum posts.

How can I tell someone’s ring size without them knowing?

The easiest way to work this out is for you to bring in another ring, and we can use this to size the ring for you. If it is a secret, choose a ring she might not notice is missing for a day!

Gold (and all precious metal) is very expensive because it is very rare and expensive to mine, and also because there is a very high demand around the world for both personal and industrial applications.

How often should I clean my rings?

You should clean your ring as often as it loses its luster and shine. If you want to restore its original condition, bring it into our store for a clean or a polish. Cleaning is free, and there is a small charge for a professional polish.

How often should I have my ring checked and serviced?

We recommend you have your ring professionally inspected once a year to make sure that the setting is still solid and that everything is in good condition. If you have white gold jewellery, this often has a rhodium plating which we recommend be re-plated every 12 months to maintain the brilliant shine.

How should I clean my ring?

We recommend you clean your ring with a jewellery cleaning solution. If you want to avoid paying for a very small and expensive bottle of solution, here is the recipe so you can make it yourself:

Mix together 1 part of cloudy ammonia, 1 part dishwashing detergent and 1 part luke warm water. Soak first, then simply use a soft lint-free cloth to clean and polish your ring.
